Application for Naomi

Wise, compassionate and responsible. Naomi has always been like a little adult. She is able to read people and can sense sincerity. She notices the person standing shyly alone. She knows what to say to engage someone and to make them feel comfortable. I have always trusted her opinion because she is thoughtful about what she says. She never seemed to go through that adolescent faze of blurting out thoughts. I trust that what she says is something she's truly considered.

When Naomi was born we turned into a family of three. We did everything together. I didn't realize that parents left their kids at home. She was always with us. Always listening and always attentive. Being such a thoughtful listener has helped to make her a thoughtful speaker. She doesn't feel the need to lend her opinion to every conversation. I wish she would. Often times she needs encouragement to contribute but her contributions are always thoughtful and add to the conversation. She sees the forest through the trees.

Naomi didn't seem to suffer from the usual teen issues. She was always quick to forgive her friends and Naomi's ability to forgive is really extraordinary. She always stayed above the fray of fights and has maintained strong relationships with her friends. I see her small group of close friends being with her throughout here life and I love the friends she has chosen.

One major event that impacted Naomi was the Iowa caucus. Naomi is close to her grandfather and travelled to Iowa often to help campaign. While acting as a caucus captain in a district during the vote, she effectively argued with an opposing representative that he had miscalculated the votes. He dismissed her but she was dogged. She didn't quit and continued to make her case until finally it was resolved in her favor. She was stronger than she had ever been.

Naomi's high school career has gone by too fast! Unfortunately for her, she is our first so we made many mistakes. According to Naomi, we weren't nearly as supportive as the other parents. We didn't get involved in her class selections, we didn't fully follow her classes and we definitely didn't get involved in the college prepping like her classmates' parents. Despite her feeling abandoned, she survived it. We never had to tell her to study or work on papers. She worked ahead and was always diligent about getting her work done. When she was struggling, she asked for help. Hunter and I have been proud of Naomi and her work. I've thought her research papers amazing (and definitely under appreciated). Hunter and I have loved hearing her opinions on what she was studying. She definitely seemed drawn to history and had a great grasp of events.
