Donald Trump has won the North Carolina Republican primary, according to the Associated Press.

Trump's victory in the state followed a contentious episode during a recent campaign stop in Fayetteville, where a 78-year-old man punched a black protester and was charged the next day.

The local sheriff's office later decided that it would not file incitement charges against Trump, despite the front-runner remarking at past events that he would like to punch a protester, as well as declaring that his campaign would cover the legal fees of supporters who roughed up those interrupting his events. Trump walked back those comments Tuesday, telling ABC's "Good Morning America" that he does not condone violence "at all."

Trump campaigned again in the state on Monday, stopping in Hickory, where protesters interrupted his on-stage appearance with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as the two discussed Trump's proposal to build a wall between the United States and Mexico.

North Carolina awards its 72 Republican delegates on a proportional basis.
