Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won Arizona's Democratic primary on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

Clinton's victory was a blow to Bernie Sanders, who had hoped to barnstorm Democratic contests in the West to give a much-needed boost to his campaign.

Of the three Democratic contests on Tuesday, Arizona's was a top priority. Both campaigns made a serious play for Hispanic voters, who account for about 30 percent of the population in the state, and dispatched top surrogates to the state. In the past few days, Labor Secretary Tom Perez and former President Bill Clinton made appearances on the Democratic front-runner's behalf while Sanders used Rep. Raul Grijalva.

Polling showed Clinton leading Sanders in the leadup to the primary. Clinton also won the support of The Arizona Republic, the state's largest newspaper.

Arizona has 85 delegates that it awards on a proportional basis.
