President Barack Obama formally announced on Wednesday that he is nominating appeals court judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.

"This is not a responsibility that I take lightly," Obama said in the Rose Garden, with Garland and Vice President Joe Biden by his side. He added that Garland is a man of "decency, modesty, integrity" who has the respect of both Democrats and Republicans.

Garland, 63, currently serves as the top judge on the influential D.C. Circuit. While being widely admired by leaders on both sides of the aisle, he wasn't unanimously confirmed for his current post.

Senate Republicans have said they will not consider Obama's nomination and will instead wait until the next president is in office to fill the seat left open by late justice Antonin Scalia.
