Hillary Clinton has won the Illinois Democratic primary, according to the Associated Press.

Polling in the state had showed a close race in the days leading up to the primary. While an NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist survey had Clinton out in front by six points, another CBS News/YouGov poll showed Sanders with a two-point edge.

Clinton faced a strong challenge from Bernie Sanders in the state, particularly in Chicago, where the Vermont senator sought to rally supporters to the polls as a referendum against Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Despite growing up in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, Clinton enjoyed little home-field advantage in the state, where the Sanders campaign hoped to duplicate its surprise victory in Michigan. Clinton spent the majority of her Monday campaigning in the state.

Illinois awards its 156 Democratic delegates on a proportional basis.
