The Chesapeake Bay is a unique and irreplaceable environmental and cultural resource. It is intertwined with the identity of the state of Maryland. In addition, it benefits tourism, creates jobs, and improves the value of our homes, farms and businesses.

Together, we've taken the strongest actions in a decade to make the Bay cleaner and healthier - actions to help restore our menhaden, blue crab, and oyster population.

We've also enlisted the citizens of our great state to assist in that effort through a host of stewardship actions, and are working with the next generation of leaders who will carry our work forward for decades to come.

I stopped by a Howard County school where the students are taking action to save our oyster population and create a more sustainable Maryland. We filmed a short video from our visit. I hope you'll watch and share it with friends.

Our strategies for restoring our oyster population are paying off. In 2013 we planted and produced 1.2 billion oysters in Maryland - and now have twice as many oysters in our waters then we did in 2010.

None of these advancements happen by chance -- they happen by choice.

The only way to sustain this progress is to involve our citizens every day, and in every way. And I was extraordinarily heartened to learn about the work Dunloggin Middle School students have done to restore our streams and grow Maryland's oyster population.
