In this week's newsletter, we are highlighting the dual problems of hunger and obesity. Worldwide, at least 1 billion people are hungry, while another 1.5 billion people are considered overweight or obese. One of Food Tank’s goals is to bridge the major disconnect between organizations that are fighting hunger and organizations that are fighting obesity. The two groups have more in common than they think and the solutions to both problems aren’t that different.

According to the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier de Schutter <http://www.srfood.org/> , our current food system has failed to address hunger, while at the same time encourages diets that lead to weight gain. Obesity causes even more deaths worldwide every year than hunger does. And Professor De Schutter notes that both undernutrition and overnutrition are dimensions of malnutrition that must be addressed together from a human rights-focused perspective.

The Barilla Center for Food <http://www.barillacfn.com/en/> & Nutrition reports that for each person who suffers from hunger, two people eat too much – causing a disproportionate gap between those who do not have sufficient food to survive and those who are overfed. In the book <http://www.barillacfn.com/en/bcfn4you/il-libro/> Eating Planet, the Barilla Center digs deeper into this alarming paradox of hunger vs. obesity – while agriculture is the most efficient and productive it has ever been, roughly one-third of the world’s population is either hungry or overweight and at least two billion people worldwide suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. Through a more holistic approach to agriculture and greater investment in agro-ecological practices, the Barilla Center believes that the negative trends of hunger and obesity can be reversed.

In his book <http://rajpatel.org/2009/10/27/stuffed-and-starved/> Stuffed and Starved, author Raj Patel <http://rajpatel.org/> says, “Global hunger and obesity are symptoms of the same problem and, what’s more, the route to eradicating world hunger is also the way to prevent global epidemics of diabetes and heart disease, and to address a host of environmental and social ills."

And in Food Tank co-Founder Ellen Gustafson's TEDx talk <http://www.ted.com/talks/ellen_gustafson_obesity_hunger_1_global_food_issue.html> , she highlights the shift in our global food system over the past 30 years toward processed foods and how this transition has perpetuated both hunger and obesity. “The fundamental problem continuing to cause both hunger and obesity is that it is difficult, almost everywhere in the world, to access nutritious foods,” says Gustafson.
