Your input and feedback continue to be very important to me, and I look forward to continuing our dialogue. As in the fall, these morning conversations will take place in the Choral Room from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Please mark your calendars. I encourage all to attend! These robberies took place on the side streets near Wisconsin Avenue between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., the time when many of our students are walking to the Metro station or bus stop. The newspaper article indicates that arrests were made. In addition, three of our Upper School students have reported that they were recently accosted at the McDonald’s on Wisconsin Avenue by another group of teenagers who were not from Sidwell Friends School. It is unknown whether or not these events are related, but given their occurrence, we ask that you speak with your children about exercising caution and being aware of their surroundings at all times. 2015/16 REENROLLMENT The reenrollment processing period for 2015/16 will be from February 2 to February 20. The link to your child’s online contract will be available on the Parent Portal beginning on the 2nd. Please contact Valerie Foster in the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid with any questions at 202-537-8111. INCLEMENT WEATHER COMMUNICATIONS As a reminder to the community, the School communicates delays and closings due to inclement weather in the following ways: Parents will receive an e-mail and a text message to the cell phone numbers on file with the School, while alternate contacts will receive a notice via e-mail only. In addition, you can check the website homepage (sidwell.edu) for the current status. A recorded message can also be accessed through the main phone number: 202-537-8100. Please note that the Athletic Hotline is no longer in use. ARTRAGEOUS: THANKS, INFO, AND FEEDBACK Thanks to everyone in the community who participated as a volunteer, performer, audience member, or crafts person last Sunday. It wouldn’t be fun without all of you. The dozens of silhouettes produced by the Quaker Life volunteers can be found on Flickr at http://bit.ly/artrageous2015; the Artistree remained up all week in the Caplin Theater lobby; and the two canvases created at Artrageous were provided to the Auction. Colorful Artrageous T-shirts are on sale in the Fox Den-- get your cherry blossoms early! Also make sure to check out pictures from the event here. We know that a few people went home without their belongings and ask that you check to make sure the coat, hat, and mittens your child is wearing are indeed theirs – it is easy to get confused when sorting through piles of similarly colored items! We also ask that you provide us with your feedback. What did you like best? What didn’t work for you? Suggestions for next year? Stay tuned for our post-Artrageous gathering February 19. We'd like to discuss these questions and start planning for next year while Artrageous 2015 is still fresh in your mind. Please let us know what you think. E-mail Jane Legg, Arts Committee co-clerk and MS parent at janelegg@yahoo.com, or Kathi Webb, director of parent relations, at webbk@sidwell.edu. REGISTER TODAY FOR OUT & ABOUT WITH FACULTY AND FRIENDS! Please join us for the first Out & About with Faculty and Friends discussion of the year: Revolution Radio: African Protest Music from Soweto to Dakar with Shields Sundberg on Tuesday, February 17, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hill and Dale Record Store in Georgetown. Shields will explore the culture of protest music in South Africa in the 1970s as well as the birth of African hip-hop. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple, and all net proceeds benefit student scholarships at Sidwell Friends. Spacing is limited--register online today. To learn more about the other faculty-led discussions taking place this spring, please view the 2015 schedule. Many thanks for your support! AUCTION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEB. 6! Need a little inspiration? Contact Jessie Jacobson, director of special events, at 202-537-8442 or e-mail jacobsonj@sidwell.edu.All proceeds go to support student financial aid. YOUTH & SPORTS CULTURE SPEAKER: FEB. 9 Does your child play Sports? Don’t miss the upcoming speaker at SFS on Monday, February 9. “The question isn’t whether we’re emotionally invested in our children, because we are. It isn’t whether we see ourselves in our children, because we do. It’s when that investment becomes so great that what is good for children is forgotten that real problems happen.”--Richard Ginsburg, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology at MGH/ Harvard Medical School, quoted in Until It Hurts: America's Obsession with Youth Sports and How It Harms Our Kids Join Mark Hyman, George Washington University assistant professor and author of Until It Hurts, along with a panel of SFS experts for a frank and open discussion of our youth sports culture. This is an opportunity to take part in a conversation about the many questions facing families with children in sports: When is the right time to start my child in an organized league? How do I keep sports fun for my child when many leagues have become hyper-competitive? Why are overuse injuries on the rise? What is driving the "global warming" of youth sports? Join us on Monday, February 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Light refreshments will be served, and child care is available. RSVP to Kathi Webb webbk@sidwell.edu if you would like to use the child care. Sponsored by the SFS Parents Association Athletics Committee. LOGISTICS INFO FOR SFS-WIZARDS TICKET HOLDERS Entry. Eager fans, doors will open for us from 5:15-5:45 p.m., and we will be able to go down near the court to watch player warm-ups. Please enter through the 6th Street entrance, which is right past the Greene Turtle on the corner of 6th and F. If you arrive after 5:45 p.m., you will have to use the main entrance on F Street, which opens at 6:00 p.m. You will not be able to attend the player warm-up segment of the evening. Please plan accordingly. Watch Warm-Ups. We will be in the very first rows of the lower level seating bowl to watch players warm up between 5:15 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. This is where you will realize just how big and quick these guys are! Once warm-ups are over, you’ll be free to explore the Verizon Center as you head to your ticketed seats for the game. T-Shirts. Look for parents in blue Wizards T-shirts and SFS baseball caps at a table near the 6th Street entrance or, for people arriving later, in section 400. We are the Athletics Committee, and we’ll be handing out T-shirts. We will have 400 shirts and appreciate that many of you provided us with size information. With a group this large, we can’t guarantee you’ll get the size you requested, but there will be a shirt for everyone and since we’re all sitting together, perhaps you can trade to get a better fit. The smallest size offered is a youth medium. As mentioned above, if you arrive after 5:45 p.m. you’ll need to use the main entrance on F Street to access the building with the general public when the Verizon Center officially opens at 6:00 p.m. To redeem your T-shirt, please go to section 400 on the concourse and look for Wizards staff members that will be passing out T-shirts there. Please identify yourself as part of the Sidwell Friends group so you get the appropriate T-shirt. Fan Tunnel. We can accommodate 50 fans in the Wizards tunnel and 50 in the Nets tunnel to high five the players as they come onto the court for the game (approximately 6:30 p.m.). The Athletics Committee will allocate those slots to students on a first-come, first-served basis. We will have paper wristbands they will need to wear so that they can get into the tunnel when called. Please remember that the tunnel will be crowded, and your student will be with other students (not with a parent) so we feel the tunnel will not be the best place for smaller children. There will be other years for them! Seating. We have most of the tickets in sections 424 and 425 and some in adjacent sections. But WE DO NOT HAVE ALL the tickets in these sections. To avoid confusion and be respectful of others, please sit in the seat for which you are ticketed. Spirit. As stated before, all 400 of us attending this game represent Sidwell Friends, and we will be a very public face for our school. Please wear your SFS and Wizards gear proudly and show your spirit loudly and appropriately. The guidelines in the Handbook for Parents and Students apply. Events COUNSELOR'S CORNER brigid_flyer.pdfSidwell Friends parents are invited to join an evening event with Brigid Schulte, award-winning Washington Post journalist and author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has Time, at GDS (on the Upper School campus) on Wednesday, February 4, at 7:00 p.m. For more information, please contact Gaby Grebski at grebskig@sidwell.edu. QUALITY OF COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE The Quality of Community Life Committee, along with your grade representatives, warmly invite you to a parent peer group meeting on Wednesday, February 25, at 7:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served, followed by parent breakout sessions organized by grade level for 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. We'll have two trained facilitators present for each grade. Please join us in a supportive atmosphere for a discussion on a range of topics that affects us and our students. GAMETIME! DANCE, FEB. 6 The Upper School Dance Ensemble meets as a PE class, and the last winter GAMETIME! is a celebration of our dancers and their parents. The Athletics Committee will host a pre-performance reception in the lobby of the Mary Ellen Caplin Theater on Friday, February 6, at 6:30 p.m. prior to the show at 7:00 p.m. As some of you experienced at Artrageous, this is a talented and entertaining group of girls and boys. Give these athletes the credit they deserve! For more information about the performance, which includes some solo performances in addition to dances by the ensemble, check the arts page, upcoming events: http://www.sidwell.edu/arts/index.aspx MEET BRYAN GARMAN: FEB. 12, 7:00 P.M. As promised, Upper School parents have another opportunity to meet Head of School Bryan Garman on Thursday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. RSVP to events@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8110. If you couldn’t make the morning meeting in January, have more questions, or want to share your thoughts with Bryan, please come. Bryan learned who he wanted to be in room 212 of the Harrison Upper School building. Please visit Room 212 tour to learn more about opportunities to meet Bryan. QUAKER CAMPS INTERESTED IN QUAKER CAMPS? On Sunday, February 1, at 11:15 a.m., in the Groome Building on the Lower School campus, there will be a presentation on Quaker camps for parents as well as prospective campers or counselors. The camps are open to all! Brochures and applications will be available for our local camps (Shiloh, Opequon, Catoctin), Journey’s End in PA, Camp Celo in NC, Friends Music Camp in OH, and Camp Onas in PA. For those interested but unable to make it, please call the program coordinator, Jane Megginson, at 717-481-4870 or visit bymcamps.org. SFS@WIZARDS: LOGISTICS INFO FOR TICKET HOLDERS! Other INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUAKER QUESTIONS This feature from the Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees provides pithy answers to Infrequently Asked Quaker Questions--things you’ve wondered about Quaker history or practice or what-have-you, but weren’t sure whom to ask. This is the place to find out! Send your Quaker Questions to your QLC clerks for forwarding. TODAY’S QUESTION: What’s with the name “Quaker?” Where does that come from? When someone starts calling you by a nickname that’s intended as a joke, the best thing to do is own it. And that’s where “Quaker” comes from. It is possible a 16th-century judge coined it as an epithet—that’s one story—or possibly competing religious sects of the time used it as an unkind slang reference to Quakers’ supposed vibrating intensity of worship. Or maybe the origin story is completely different. No matter the original source, Friends came to accept the nickname “Quaker” as an alternative moniker for themselves, their faith, and their practice. When someone gives you a name that starts to stick, even if the name is a little mean-spirited or is intended to put you down, then you can often take the power of the name back by adopting it with good humor. So Quakers pretty much did adopt it, although formally we still mostly call ourselves Friends, as in Sidwell Friends School, or the American Friends Service Committee, or the Friends Committee on National Legislation, or even just the Religious Society of Friends. QUAKER QUOTES "We will be able to emerge from the bleak and desolate midnight of man's inhumanity to man into the bright and glittering daybreak of freedom and justice. This is what stands ahead. We've made progress, and it is great progress that we must make if we are to fulfill the dreams of our democracy, the dreams of Christianity, the dreams of the great religions of the world...let us continue, my friends, going on and on toward that great city where all men live together as brothers in respected dignity and worth of all human personality. This will be a great day, a day, figuratively speaking, when the "morning stars will sing together, and the sons of God will shout for joy.'" ---From Martin Luther King Jr.'s address to the annual gathering of Quakers, summer 1958. ?For the full address: http://www.thekingcenter.org/archive/document/friends-journal-quaker-weekly ?Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism in the SFS community.?
