U.S. Global Leadership Coalition Dear Hunter, This Week's Bookends: The State of the Union (SOTU) and the President's budget request bookend this week, and partisan bickering continues. Crises rage from Yemen to Ukraine, so I expect a heavy dose on foreign policy, especially given the GOP forums in IA and CA for 2016 wannabes. Glad to see lots of talk of the need for America's global engagement. The President gave several shout-outs in the SOTU to smart international development and renewed his call to end extreme poverty. But will the budget he unveils next Monday, and ultimately Congress, provide enough resources to address the enormity of global crises? Watch for our complete analysis next week. http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=mH1oGSh99wHNm9Ii-2P74g Tidbits to Keep you in the Know: * Bill & Melinda Gates the Betting Type? Yep, in their annual letter, they wager that in just 15 years, life in developing countries will improve faster than in any time in history. People will have unprecedented opportunities to eat nutritious food, get an education, and raise themselves from poverty. These breakthroughs will largely be driven by innovations in technology such as mobile banking. Beyond the many interviews, the Gateses found clever ways to get the word out, including a viral video courtesy of Jimmy Fallon. http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=5WT-a0kV_JMRWLG3Ma9q9A http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=FkYEOcCmqgKvi2HgEaA_rg http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=1ejj7n6L4_aIVUKV0gqsFg * Kerry at Davos: Beating Extremism - Not on Battlefield. At the World Economic Forum, Secretary Kerry reminded the elite crowd how poverty, rampant unemployment, and lack of government accountability create fertile ground for unrest. To fight extremists, he said, "the outcome is going to be determined in classrooms, workplaces, houses of worship, community centers, urban street corners..." Senate Armed Services Chair John McCain launched a series of hearings. This week's hearings: USGLC National Security Advisory Council members Admiral William Fallon and General James Mattis, then our Advisory Council members Henry Kissinger, George Schulz, and Madeleine Albright, with Kissinger also testifying before new Senate Foreign Relations Chair Bob Corker. http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=qespXxTkrqgxS_RnxXsjbA Recommended read: Michele Flournoy and Richard Fontaine on a path to bipartisan foreign policy.
