Truman National Security Project! This month, Truman announced the first awardee of our flagship fundraising event, the 2017 Truman Awards Dinner, and focused on events across the nation, covering topics like climate change, tensions with North Korea, and member recruitment.


Kristofer GoldsmithKristofer Goldsmith served in the U.S. Army, separating in 2007 at the rank of sergeant. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom-III in 2005. Kris has since become an advocate for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and those with less-than-honorable discharges. He serves as the founder and president of High Ground Veterans Advocacy, which trains veterans to become advocates and leaders both nationally and in their local communities; he is also currently the Assistant Director for Policy and Government Affairs at Vietnam Veterans of America, a congressionally-chartered veteran service organization. He also studies political science at Columbia University.


Recently, Kris has helped to change the national discourse regarding what this nation owes all of its veterans. Thanks to Kris' efforts, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs reversed course on a decades-old policy that had unfairly denied access to urgently needed mental healthcare for hundreds of thousands of veterans with less-than-honorable discharges. Last year, he led a coalition of scores of military and veterans service organizations to pass the Fairness for Veterans Act, a bill that requires the Department of Defense to fully consider the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and military sexual trauma before preventing veterans from accessing essential benefits. This summer, Kris has led the effort to reform the GI Bill so that it works as a lifetime
benefit, allowing future veterans to go to school at whatever point in their life that is best for them. He has recently published pieces on these issues with

Tidewater Screening by Truman National Security Project’s LA Chapter
On 27 July, Truman National Security Project’s Los Angeles Chapter hosted a screening of Truman Fellow Roger Sorkin’s latest project, Tidewater. This film explores the challenge of rising sea levels in the Tidewater region of Virginia and North Carolina, which encompasses Hampton Roads and Naval Station Norfolk. It also highlights the innovative, whole-of-government problem-solving model being pioneered by local leaders to fight the devastating effects of climate change. Truman Salon in New York City
On 29 June, Truman National Security Project supporter Mitch Draizin hosted a salon at his home in New York City. This gathering brought together a group of new and current Truman supporters to discuss lessons learned from the 2016 elections, the Russia investigation, continued tensions with North Korea, and the efforts by Truman members nationwide to counter the current administration. The event featured the Honorable Steve Israel, who is a new Truman board member.
