Dear Hunter,
On May 5 of this year, the FDA approved Radicava (Edaravone), the first new treatment for ALS in 22 years. You have likely seen information about this news over the past two months and have a lot of questions. Please know that the Greater Philadelphia Chapter is actively collaborating with MT Pharma & The ALS Association nationally to continue providing you with updates as soon as we can and with as much detail as possible.
This email also serves as my introduction to you as the new Director of Care Services here at The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter. Clearly this is an exciting time for the ALS cause and I am eager to continue to advance the mission of the Chapter on behalf of all ALS families. I began here in early July and was immediately impressed by the professionalism and compassion of the Chapter Care Services staff, the physiciansand multidisciplinary teams at our many clinics, and the family and caregivers and individuals with ALS who are fighting this disease every day.
Radicava was approved by the FDA in under a year after Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation submitted a New Drug Application. The speed of this approval process was unprecedented and is very good news for the ALS community. This new treatment option potentially offers the opportunity to make a positive impact on the quality of life of many individuals with ALS.
You probably have many questions about this new drug, such as what it does, when it will be available, and how much it costs. As part of our ongoing collaboration, representatives of MT Pharma came to our Chapter offices this week and sat down with us to talk about how we can continue to work together to provide information and support to all of you. One of the results of this ongoing collaboration is the creation of Webinars and a page of Frequently Asked Questions.
