One of those nominations is the masterpiece mini-series “Big Little Lies” starring Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz, and Laura Dern among others. I was memorized by this show. In my view “Big Little Lies” and another HBO nominee for Best Limited Series “The Night Of” were the best two pieces of visual content of the year—far better than anything I saw in the movies. And these shows have captured the cultural zeitgeist in a way that “Manchester By the Sea,” “Moonlight,” or even “La La Land” haven’t. It’s stunning how the culture has changed—most people don’t enjoy going to the movies anymore. I still do, but I’m rarely transported in the theater the way I am when watching “Big Little Lies,” “The Night Of,” or “Game of Thrones,” “Ray Donovan,” “Girls,” and “Black Sails.” I miss the days when going to the movies was a big deal. But thankfully, American television is currently transformational. Now if rock and roll could just make a comeback… Speaking of rock…the “Big Little Lies” soundtrack is off the charts. Somehow, they seamlessly melded contemporary music like the Alabama Shakes, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, and Michael Kiwanuka with the Temptations, Neil Young, and Fleetwood Mac. It’s brilliant, and the soundtrack is set against the beauty of Monterrey’s coastline to make for a truly cinematic, big budget film experience—even though it’s not on the big screen. I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t yet watched “Big Little Lies,” (we do live in a video on demand world), but the use of Fleetwood Mac’s monster 1977 hit “Dreams (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27e5H5ZZvS8&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=dacf20f881-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_07_13&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-dacf20f881-145367789) ” is really cool.
