The Fund strives to finance infrastructure projects, technical assistance, and studies that will generate transformational impact in Central America and the Caribbean. Yet its most pioneering feature is its provision of donations that enable borrowers to invest in projects by taking a loan from the IDB and having a portion of the principal owed paid back through zero coupon bonds, which are issued at a significant discount but pay no interest. In a first phase the IDB will mobilize US$28 million, but the Fund's mobilization potential is much greater when considering the prefeasibility studies that will be financed through the Infrastructure and Integration Multi-Donor Fund, unlocking more resources from the public and private sectors. Scriven have signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation between their institutions. Specifically, the partners seek to facilitate policy dialogue, south-south cooperation, and sustainable infrastructure financing. The IDB's accreditation to the GCF allows for the mobilization of US$511 million for four IDB projects already pre-approved by the GCF board. This historic partnership, which has other projects in the pipeline, is sure to generate significant climate change mitigation and adaptation impacts in the region. Berklee College of Music Goes to Paraguay This June, Berklee College of Music deployed its Berklee Latino - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheInterAmericanDeve/d0b9c671c0/60edebaf74/1052a23d7a program in Paraguay. Part of a Berklee-IDB effort to promote music education in Colombia and Mexico, this program will make Berklee's music industry expertise, scholarships, and workshops accessible to Paraguay's aspiring musicians. Targeting more than 100 young musicians, the program will be supported by the IDB through the Korea Fund for Poverty Reduction, financed by the Government of Korea, and other institutions. Harnessing the Power of Sports for Development with Real Madrid This June, Real Madrid CF and FundaciÓn Real Madrid President Florentino PÉrez and IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno formalized a collaboration to improve lives through sports. The partnership will kick off in Costa Rica next season by building a school that uses sports to advance social inclusion while implementing additional projects in Argentina, Colombia, and Peru. Working through the IDB-led ConnectAmericas - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheInterAmericanDeve/d0b9c671c0/60edebaf74/a78e77c709 platform, participating companies received guidance on overcoming growth barriers and other obstacles. Through this experience, students were able to help SMEs identify new strategies for success while better understanding the business challenges faced in LAC. Switzerland and the IDB Continue to Partner for a Safer Honduras through US$10 Million Effort A Letter of Intent signed by the IDB and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) seeks to enhance and revitalize the partners' joint citizen security efforts in Honduras. Using a Swiss commitment of US$10 million, the partnership will work hand-in-hand with the Honduran government to strengthen crime prevention, law enforcement, and justice between 2018 and 2029. Forging Ties With Florida International University As part of the IDB's strategic efforts to work with academic institutions, a partnership between Florida International University (FIU) and the IDB was solidified earlier this year. Moving forward the partners will seek to develop joint knowledge products, collaborate through FIU's Financial Wellness Clinic as a means of supporting the IDB-led IndexAmericas - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheInterAmericanDeve/d0b9c671c0/60edebaf74/ca0dde26d8 initiative, and promote corporate sustainability through the design of content and programs. To Advance the NDCs, Look to Our Newest Multi-Donor Trust Fund The IDB has approved the NDC Pipeline Accelerator Multi-Donor Trust Fund, a new instrument aiming to fast track bankable and sustainable projects that move LAC closer to aligning investments with national commitments to the Paris Climate Accords (referred to as Nationally Determined Contributions or NDCs). Teaming Up to Track Infrastructure Investment in LAC A July agreement has renewed the collaboration between the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), and the IDB. Providing LAC Cities Transatlantic Support This June, the IDB and MEDEF international's Sustainable City Task Force, a network of 450 French companies specialized in urban development, celebrated a new cooperation framework on infrastructure, housing, habitat, and governance. MEDEF's Task Force will complement the Bank's City Lab's efforts to support sustainability activities in LAC. Attended by IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno, the meeting also allowed French companies to discuss the challenges they face in LAC and the ways in which the IDB Group can support the French private sector. IndexAmericas Presented at Thomson Reuters, S-Network Global Indexes Event in New York City Just last week IndexAmericas - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheInterAmericanDeve/d0b9c671c0/60edebaf74/c04402da12 was presented at the "Summer in the City" 5th Annual CSR Investing Summit, held in the Thomson Reuters tower in Times Square. The partners behind IndexAmericas - Thomson Reuters, S-Network Global Indexes, Florida International University, the IDB, and the IIC - gathered to discuss the initiative which seeks to promote and celebrate corporate sustainability leaders in LAC. Building Bridges Between Cities in Santander 30 mayors from Latin American and Spanish cities gathered this June at the II Ibero-American Mayors Forum 2017 in Santander, Spain. During the workshop, leaders shared best practices for promoting sustainable development in cities and discussed topics including climate change, urban governance, and smart cities. The Forum also included visits to Bilbao and within Santander that showcased innovative projects with potential for replication in LAC. IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno attended the event, and is pictured above alongside ÍÑigo de la Serna, Minister of Public Works and former Mayor of Santander, and Gema Igual, Mayor of Santander. In Paris, Top Leaders Forecast LAC's Economic Future Co-organized by the OECD Development Center, the French Ministry of Economy, and the IDB, the International Economic Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean is one of Europe's most prominent LAC-focused events. The June Forum was attended by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski of Peru, President Jimmy Morales of Guatemala, and leaders from companies, governments, and international organizations. In addition to analyzing the region's economic outlook, the Forum also discussed the potential impact of new global policies, regional integration, and youth entrepreneurship. Humanitas360 Institute, MIT Media Lab, and the IDB Encourage Citizen Engagement This year the IDB formalized a collaboration with Humanitas360 Institute to encourage citizen participation in development in Brazil. Through a series of events on Promise Tracker, a citizen monitoring platform designed to help communities collect data and advocate for change, the partners and MIT Media Lab gathered to discuss issues like transparency, civic technology, and the results of a Promise Tracker project monitoring public school lunches. IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno opened the SÃo Paulo event, while the IDB's Representative in Brazil Hugo Flores attended the BelÉm edition. Encouraging Investment in LAC with LatinFinance The IDB and the IIC once again joined forces with LatinFinance around the third Latin America Japan Investors Forum - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheInterAmericanDeve/d0b9c671c0/60edebaf74/e062eb99a1 . Held in Tokyo, the June Forum analyzed the commercial relationship between Japan and LAC and fostered ties between companies, financiers, and investors from both sides of the Pacific. Gema Sacristan, the IIC's Chief Investment Officer, attended the event alongside the IDB's Representative in Japan, Ichiro Oishi to present the restructured IIC to this audience and highlight opportunities for investment and cooperation. At the FÓrum Europa, the IDB Puts LAC on the Map The IDB participated in the FÓrum Europa in Madrid this summer, represented by the Bank's Vice President for Countries Alexandre Meira da Rosa. Organized by Nueva EconomÍa FÓrum, the event is a landmark forum in Spain for debate and knowledge sharing. In his remarks, Vice President da Rosa highlighted the region's investment opportunities and the key role of public-private partnerships in closing the infrastructure investment gap. Promoting Infrastructure Investment with a Sustainability Focus in China Nearly 2,000 participants gathered this June for the VIII International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum. Organized by the China International Contractors Association (CHINCA) in partnership with the IDB, the event discussed the importance of boosting infrastructure investment while keeping a close eye on social and environmental considerations. The Forum is just one element of the CHINCA-IDB partnership, which has achieved various milestones in the infrastructure space. Promoting New Approaches to Agriculture at the World Economic Forum The IDB continued to position partnerships as an effective vehicle for development this year, participating in the New Vision for Agriculture High-Level Meeting: Advancing Public-Private Cooperation in Latin America. Held in Buenos Aires alongside the World Economic Forum, the IDB's Manager of Outreach and Partnerships Bernardo Guillamon helped close the event with a reminder of the critical role that global and regional organizations play in supporting public-private collaboration. Bringing together more than 150 participants, these seminars explored the microfinance landscape in LAC and presented a survey on micro-investment crowd funding developed by the MIF, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Music Securities, a key IDB Group partner in the crowd funding space. Promoting the Circular Economy with INCAE Business School The IDB and the MIF partnered with INCAE Business School on the Circular Economy Workshop: Opportunities for Costa Rica event. Held in San Jose this June, the partners joined public and private sector leaders to discuss the importance of transitioning Costa Rica to a circular economy model. This event, which will soon be followed by a publication, is directly linked to an effort between the IDB/MIF and the World Economic Forum to create a Circular Economy Hub for Latin America. Strengthening Ties with Multilaterals in Asia Working through its Office in Asia, the IDB has continued to strengthen ties with other multilaterals. For instance, Ichiro Oishi, the Bank's Representative in Japan, joined an important dialogue with leaders from academia, government, and international organizations at the Asian Development Bank Institute's Conference: 20 Years After the Asian Financial Crisis. He also participated in the Asian Development Bank's 50th Annual Meeting in Yokohama, joining more than 6,000 attendees at this gathering. Finally, Julio Angel, Principal Advisor at the IDB's Office in Asia, represented the Bank at the Second Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, joining more than 2,500 participants to discuss investment and Asia-LAC ties. In Japan, Talking Sports for Development with a Rugby Legend The IDB's Office in Asia teamed up with the Japan Association of Latin America and the Caribbean (JALAC) and the Japan Rugby Association to co-host a workshop for AgustÍn Pichot, Vice-Chairman of World Rugby Association. A legendary Argentine rugby player, Pichot and his fellow participants at this workshop discussed the important role of sports in advancing development. Discussing Development with University Students in Tokyo As part of the Bank's focus on strengthening ties with universities, the IDB's Office in Asia visited Rikkyo University this June, delivering a lecture on multilateral development banks and the IDB specifically to 80 undergraduate students. Known in English as St. Paul University, the IDB's Representative in Japan Ichiro Oishi covered the basics of development finance, the structure of multilateral institutions, and other information about the IDB and the LAC region. Creating Collaborative Cities Leaders, specialists, and researchers working on urban issues gathered this June in Buenos Aires for the XII Forum for City Leaders: Toward Collaborative Cities. The event was organized by the Argentina-based Center for the Implementation of Public Policies for Equity and Growth (CIPPEC), the Canada-based International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Argentina's Ministry for the Production of the Nation, the IDB, and the MIF. With a focus on promoting the shared economy as a vehicle for social inclusion, the forum explored how to innovate on conservation, urban resilience, and urban governance. Exploring the Impact Investing Landscape with the GIIN This summer the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), a longstanding partner in the impact investing space, joined IDB Group specialists at their Washington, DC headquarters to discuss the impact investing landscape and how to promote more of these investments in LAC. Drawing from their annual investor survey and other research, the workshop brought IDB Group specialists up to speed with the latest trends in impact investing, diving deep into specific sectors and talking in detail about investor preferences and other topics.
