R.Hunter: President Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos's latest budget would cause untellable damage to our public education system.

Slashing $9.2 billion in total, their proposal would eliminate funding for literacy and college financial aid programs, like work-study and college-access efforts. It would weaken TRIO - a group of programs that specifically support lower-income and first-generation college students. It would even gut anti-bullying initiatives and mental health services.

All in all, this budget could redirect money out of our public schools and into voucher programs for wealthier private schools instead - a change of course that could hinder the educations of millions of our most vulnerable students. Put another way: The cuts in this budget would disproportionately affect and fail to protect lower-income students. That is something we simply cannot accept.

R.Hunter, every child deserves access to a quality education, regardless of their families' income or the type of school they attend.
