Dear Hunter,, This past week the Global Business Policy Council held its 25th annual CEO retreat in Taormina, Sicily. The theme of this year’s retreat, “Stability and Prosperity at Risk: Prospects for Global Business”, is more timely than ever. Successive shocking events; worldwide cyberattacks, Brexit, and the US, French, and British recent election results, have highlighted that volatility and uncertainty appear to have become steady state. The retreat convened leading global thinkers, executives, and innovators to reflect on the underlying trends shaping current geopolitics and macroeconomics, including whether—and if so, how—new challenges to capitalism, democracy and globalization can be addressed. Among the many insights shared around the retreat table, and expressed in meetings this year with executives around the globe, is that business leaders worry about how their best laid plans might well be upended by “exogenous” forces. While increasingly bullish about global economic growth, executives today are also more uniformly committed to prepare their businesses to adapt to an ever-changing and challenging operating environment. This is consistent with results from an upcoming Global Business Policy Council “Views From the C-Suite” report, a survey of 400 senior business leaders from around the world, which will be released on July 11. I discuss the report’s findings, and the specific ways that executives have responded to increasing global uncertainty, in my latest Forbes column, which is linked below.
