Black history is an inseparable part of America’s long journey.

From the vile chains of slavery to the bloody struggles for civil rights, the African-American community has held America to the commitment made in the Declaration of Independence that all are created equal.

But the struggle for civil and equal rights is not over.

As we celebrate Black History Month, and reflect on the profound contributions made to America by men and women of color, there are strident voices of bigotry and hatred raised around the country.

These voices want to drag America back, not move us forward. These voices want an America of exclusion, not inclusion.

Washington Senate Dems are working every day to build a more inclusive state for all our families. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay current on what we’re doing to fight back against racism and bigotry.

Politicians are ramping up efforts to suppress voter registration and gerrymander electoral districts — all intended to prevent African-Americans from exercising the most fundamental right of every citizen: the right to vote.

That’s why, in the Senate, we’ve passed the Washington Voting Rights Act to ensure every Washingtonian is not denied this essential right.

The great Shirley Chisholm, who broke barriers for African-American women across the country, once said, “In the end, anti-black, anti-female, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing. Anti-humanism.”

As we honor the profound contributions of African-Americans to the United States, let us turn Shirley Chisholm’s words into action, work together to end all forms of discrimination wherever we may find it.
