NDI has been at the forefront of supporting women’s participation in
Ukrainian politics since 2010. These activities have been shaped by
extensive public opinion research, which shows that Ukrainians overwhelming
want to see more gender equality in political life and that both men and
women are open to voting for female candidates. The research also points to
some of the key barriers to improvement, including gatekeeping political
parties, a tendency by women to underestimate their own capacities, and
pervasive sexism in public life. NDI’s multi-layered programming, which is
supported by multiple donors, has focused on:

Advising parties on mainstreaming gender considerations into
party-building activities;

Helping parties train women candidates and aspirants to participate in
elections;
-

Supporting the formation of cross-party caucuses that advance women’s
interests in the national parliament as well as in more than 30 local
legislatures;

Facilitating gender-responsive budgeting in local governments;
-

Supporting Ukrainian civic groups in conducting civic education and
advocacy campaigns to combat sexism in politics, the media, and the
workplace;

Promoting promising individuals through a women’s leadership academy; and
-

Co-hosting high-profile conferences and media events to shine a
spotlight on Ukraine’s progress on gender issues and promote buy-in for
future reforms.


The Euromaidan demonstrations of 2014, also known as the Revolution of
Dignity, tapped a deep demand for new faces and new ways of conducting
politics. This demand has in turn fueled calls for gender equality. NDI’s
programs have found fertile soil in this changing landscape and have
contributed to the measurable progress we are seeing.
