The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative at CSIS is pleased to bring you a top-to-bottom overhaul of its Island Tracker. The earlier Island Tracker followed the dredging and reclamation efforts of China, Vietnam, and Taiwan in the Spratly Islands. But as claimant nations have turned in recent years from land reclamation to consolidation and fortification of island outposts, the Island Tracker has shifted its focus to keeping track of infrastructure and capabilities across the South China Sea. With this revision, AMTI brings you a database of high-resolution satellite imagery, trenchant analysis, and relevant facts on more than 90 outposts in the Spratlys, Paracels, and beyond.

OCCUPATION AND ISLAND BUILDING

Five claimants occupy nearly 70 disputed reefs and islets spread across the South China Sea. They have built more than 90 outposts on these contested features, many of which have seen expansion in recent years. AMTI has gathered satellite imagery of each outpost, along with other relevant information, to document their current status and any changes they have undergone in recent years.
