The federal government shut down at midnight, after Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) blocked a bipartisan budget deal from receiving a vote before the funding deadline.

The bill, which would fund the government through March 23 and lift stiff spending caps, is expected to receive votes in the Senate and House in the coming hours.
