R.Hunter: Last month, President Trump pushed forward a policy that would expand offshore oil and gas drilling up and down the Eastern Seaboard - and ignored expert opinions and residents' outrage.

I want to be clear: This decision is reckless and shortsighted in just about every way. Not only would an oil spill in the Atlantic greatly endanger the health of millions of Americans, but it would also unnecessarily jeopardize the environmental and economic well-being of the entire East Coast, including Delaware.

By making this decision, President Trump has proven that he cares more about pandering to Big Oil than about protecting Delawareans' well-being, communities and economy. This is not a red-versus-blue issue. Republican officials up and down the seaboard have come out in opposition to President Trump's proposal as well - with memories of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the damage it caused still too fresh in all of our minds.

From tourism to fishing, Delaware jobs and small businesses are dependent on a clean ocean and a habitable beach. Our beaches bring in $6.9 billion each year and support 10% of our state's workforce.

Protecting our coastlines is the right thing to do for our children, our environment and our economy. An oil spill off our coast would be devastating and would lead to environmental and financial costs that would last for generations.
