The Library's silence is perhaps its best known feature. We imagine it as a refuge from the bustle of Manhattan, and its silence appeals to one's sense of sound as profoundly as a concerto, the honk of horns, or the din of a subway car. But the sound of silence is not the only sense to which the Library appeals.
