Opening March 22nd and on view through September 9th, Surface/Depth: The Decorative After Miriam Schapiro (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/surfacedepth) , presents 29 works of pioneering feminist artist and founding member of the Pattern and Decoration movement, Miriam Schapiro. To explore her legacy, works by a select group of contemporary artists, including Sanford Biggers, Josh Blackwell, Edie Fake, Jeffrey Gibson, Judy Ledgerwood, Jodie Mack, Sara Rahbar, Ruth Root, and Jasmin Sian, will be exhibited alongside.

The juxtaposition of historic and contemporary work brings into critical focus the tremendous role Schapiro’s femmages played in the reframing of craft and decoration, while shining a light on the way artists today continue to approach the decorative as a language of abstraction tied to the personal and the political.

La Frontera: Encounters Along the Border (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/la-frontera) features 48 jewelry artists from Mexico, Latin America, the United States, and Europe who expose the underlying currents of the US–Mexico border environment within geographic, political, economic, social, cultural, and ideological contexts. The artists, working in the realm of jewelry, transform metal, fiber, wood, and other materials into representations of their experiences, their influences, their dreams, and their nightmares.

The companion exhibition to Derrick Adams: Sanctuary (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/derrick-adams-sanctuary) , Unpacking the Green Book: Travel and Segregation in Jim Crow America (http://www.madmuseum.org/exhibition/unpacking-green-book) explores the history of The Green Book in an interactive project space through materials such as books, artwork, and films devoted to the topics of segregation, automobility, travel, and leisure, specifically as they relate to the black American experience in the midcentury.

Join us on March 4, from 10 am to 1 pm for a scavenger hunt, embroidery ,and story time, during MAD’s monthly Studio Sunday (http://www.madmuseum.org/events/studio-sunday-81) . Visitors are invited to work with artist Natalia Nakazawa for her project Our Stories of Migration. After drawing their ancestral, present, and future paths on a world map, participants will embroider (http://madmuseum.org/events/studio-sunday-81) their personal paths onto the surface of a collaborative tapestry. The workshop also includes a scavenger hunt (http://madmuseum.org/events/studio-sunday-81) in the exhibitions Derrick Adams: Sanctuary (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/derrick-adams-sanctuary) and La Frontera: Encounters Along the Border (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/la-frontera) around the question: “What does it mean to be a global citizen?” Studio Sundays’ intergenerational workshops are included with museum admission and open to anyone ages 6 and up.

MAD is now accepting applicants to Cycle 30 of the Artist Studios Program (https://madmuseum.org/learn/artist-studios) , offering studio space and financial support to one Artist Fellow and six one-day-a-week Artists-in-Residence for a six-month term, from August 2018 through January 2019. MAD is deeply saddened at the news of the passing of our friend, the brilliant Wendell Castle. Close to the heart of the MAD community, Castle was long heralded as the father of the American art furniture movement. Castle's career developed in parallel with MAD's own history, from his career-launching inclusion in ‘Young Americans 1962’ (1962) to ‘Wendell Castle Remastered (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/wendell-castle-remastered) ’ (2015), alongside his iconic stack-laminated furniture, which toured to the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester near Castle's own hometown in fall 2017.

Derrick Adams: Sanctuary (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/derrick-adams-sanctuary) presents new work in mixed-media collage, assemblage on wood panels, and sculpture presented in a site-specific installation designed by the artist that reimagine safe destinations for the black American traveler. This exhibition was inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book, a Jim Crow–era guidebook identifying businesses that were places of refuge and leisure for black American road-trippers during a time of open and legally prescribed discrimination.
