Monthly Newsletter from JVC Northwest with news, updates, resources, & job opportunities. Message from the Executive Director February is Black History Month. Criticism of this special designation includes the argument that the rich history and contributions of African Americans should be fully incorporated into the history of the United States and not focused on at one time of year. There is so much richness, courage, strength, and beauty to be celebrated in the achievements of African Americans. Let us listen to, learn from, and act upon the stories of African American lives. And, this February, let’s be especially conscious that Black Lives Matter. -Jeanne Haster JVC Northwest News Ruined Readers Registration Sign up to participate in a club in your area Register today for the Ruined Readers Book Club! No experience of service has left my stomach in knots as much as operating a needle exchange program." Read Rachel’s reflection on harm reduction and the metaphor helping her reflect deeply on her service experience thus far in her full post here, as part of ISN’s JV Reflects blog series. JVC Northwest Blog Becoming Human: Leaving Behind a Culture of Doing "Western culture is a culture of 'doing'...it wasn’t until much later that I discovered the deeper reasons why I said yes to everything: I had a dark and painful fear that if I didn’t do all of these things, then I wouldn’t be enough." In a post on L'Arche Portland's blog, JV Jacqueline Mosher (Gresham, OR '17-'18) describes the shift of leaving behind the frenzy of college for the stillness of her JV placement at L'Arche Portland. Read more here. What does Black History Month accomplish? Is it actually productive or just a form of tokenism? Does it trigger traumatic experiences for Black Americans? Jason Parham's What is the Purpose of Black History Month? A Roundtable brings together six Black Americans to explore the diversity of perspectives to these and other questions. March is a vivid first-hand account of Congressman John Lewis’ (GA-5) lifelong struggle for civil and human rights, meditating in the modern age on the distance traveled since the days of Jim Crow and segregation.
