* SOUTH SUDAN: A new report this week from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) revealed that 7 million people in South Sudan — almost two-thirds of the population — could be pushed into severe hunger and famine-like conditions during the May-July lean season unless humanitarian assistance and access are maintained. The new IPC report comes one year after famine was declared in parts of South Sudan. In an interview with the BBC, the head of WFP, David Beasley, explained how prolonged conflict across the globe has led to an increase in hunger for the first time in a decade — and this growing hunger crisis now threatens to further destabilize the planet. * SYRIA: Humanitarian agencies are calling for an immediate ceasefire in Syria to reach people trapped in the besieged areas of Eastern Ghouta in rural Damascus, the Idlib governorate in the country’s northwest and the Afrin district in Aleppo. A recent upsurge in violence—including airstrikes and shelling—have killed hundreds of people in Eastern Ghouta and Idlib, displacing more than a quarter of a million people. Meanwhile, limited funding has forced WFP to reduce its food assistance from 4 million people to 3 million people last month. In an interview with The Guardian, WFP’s Syria Country Director Jakob Kern said the situation for families in these areas is no longer about access to basic needs. "It is about survival.
