Friend, Chicago is at a crossroads. Since I announced my decision to run for mayor, I've spent the last few weeks meeting with Chicagoans across the city. Whether I'm in Chatham, Pilsen, Chinatown or Belmont Cragin, I keep hearing the same things. People are worried about crime. About their children's education. About the way neighborhoods aren't getting the investment they need to bring opportunity to every Chicagoan. People are fleeing this city, and it's getting less affordable for the families that remain. I can't stand by and do nothing. This is where I grew up. Where I had and raised my kids. This is where my grandchildren live. It's a city that I love and want to see flourish for years to come. It's the reason I've decided to run for mayor. Last week, I filed more than 45,000 signatures to make my bid official. I've seen tough times like these before, and they've always required bold moves. When I was President Obama's Chief of Staff, we took extraordinary steps to stabilize the economy and return the country to growth amid some of the worst economic conditions in history. When I was President Clinton's Secretary of Commerce, we helped create 11 million jobs to lift the economy out of a slump and provided more than $1B in grant assistance to more than 3,000 underserved communities. Friend, this campaign isn't about me -- it's about all of us coming together to transform Chicago into a city that works for all of us. It's time for bold moves. We need to think bigger than ever before. No more settling for the status quo. At this crossroad in our city's history, we can't afford any less. This is the time to act, not sit on the sidelines.
