Dear friends—

2.5 million children in America go to sleep without a home of their own each year. About half of those children are under six years old—that’s 1 in every 18 children. Despite those staggering numbers—and the fact that homelessness is on the rise—there’s still a surprising lack of resources about homelessness geared to young children and the providers who work with them. This holiday season, we hope to help in our uniquely Sesame way.

I’d like to introduce you to Lily, an optimistic 7-year old Muppet who’s the star of a new initiative on family homelessness. Just launched on Sesame Street in Communities, the initiative includes videos starring Lily and Elmo, a storybook, and a wealth of professional development resources for teachers, social workers, and other providers serving families experiencing homelessness. (For a deeper dive, the New York Times featured an in-depth piece about the initiative last week.) Most importantly, our new resources offer help, hope, and healing to children like Lily—because the trauma of not having a permanent place to stay can carry profound and lasting effects if we don’t give young children the support they need.

This work was made possible by a generous matching grant from the Peter G. Peterson family, establishing the Joan Ganz Cooney Fund for Vulnerable Children. (With the support of generous friends and partners, we’ve raised half of this match!)
