GINGRICH THINK TANK COLLECTED MILLIONS FROM HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY:"A think tank founded by GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich collected at least $37 million over the past eight years from major health-care companies and industry groups, offering special access to the former House speaker and other perks, according to records and interviews," The Washington Post's Dan Eggen reports. "The Center for Health Transformation, which opened in 2003, brought in dues of as much as $200,000 per year from insurers and other health-care firms, offering some of them 'access to Newt Gingrich' and 'direct Newt interaction,' according to promotional materials. The biggest funders, including firms such
as AstraZeneca, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Novo Nordisk, were also eligible to receive discounts on 'products and workshops' from other Gingrich groups. The health center advocated, among other things, requiring that 'anyone who earns more than $50,000 a year must purchase health insurance or post a bond,' a type of insurance mandate that has since become anathema to conservatives."

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PAID GINGRICH AS A CONSULTANT:"The Chamber, the largest lobbying organization in Washington, paid Mr. Gingrich about $840,000, according to people familiar with the arrangement, or about $120,000 a year for seven years beginning in 2001, to serve on an informal board of advisers to its president and senior staff," Brody Mullins writes in today's Wall Street Journal. NO-SHOW FOR UNION LEADER INTERVIEW:In Republican politics, the Union Leader's editorial board is second only to the Wall Street Journal in political importance. Cain appears to have irreconcilably turned the influential conservatives at the paper against him. Here is how the news side explained a saga that has broken through into the mainstream media:"The interview was scheduled last week and was supposed to last between an hour and about 75 minutes. Initially, the Cain campaign agreed to the full hour or more but then told the newspaper it did not want C-SPAN to tape the interview...Cain's campaign apparently scheduled another event at roughly the same time and said Cain could appear at

GAY MARRIAGE - CALIFORNIA COURT RULING A SCOTUS HEARING LIKELY:"Sponsors of California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage have the right to challenge a federal judge's ruling that declared the law unconstitutional, the state Supreme Court declared Thursday, clearing the way for a federal appeals court test of an issue that could make its way to the nation's high court," per the San Francisco Chronicle. "The decision addressed a procedural but potentially crucial issue: Can private backers of an initiative represent the state's interests when the governor and attorney general, who normally decide whether and how to defend laws in court, bow out of the case? The court's unanimous
ruling will almost certainly allow Protect Marriage, the religious coalition that campaigned for Proposition 8 in 2008, to proceed with its appeal in the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco."
