Tuesday - December 6, 2011 From the School Query This week’s query: When should you put yourself first and when should you put your friends first? Notes from Sally 5th grade wellness HGD letter.docx Assembly: 7/8 Holiday Concert (begins at 1:45) Northwest Current correspondent: Elinor Howells The 7/8 holiday concert will be held this week. Students in the instrumental and choral ensembles will perform on Wednesday evening beginning at 7 PM and Friday afternoon beginning at 1:45 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend either performance. Just a reminder of the Sleep Program tonight – 7:30 PM in the Meeting House. Hope to see you there! First trimester grade reports will be posted next week. Look for an email that will let you know that reports are available; this will also include instructions for accessing them through Educator Online. Yesterday half of the fifth graders began their Winter PE rotation in the Health and Wellness program. As a follow up to the informational session about this Core Health and Wellness Course that occurred on October 28th, information is attached about the fifth grade curriculum. We ask that fifth grade parents review the attached objectives of the Human Growth and Development lessons as a guide to assist you in continuing these conversations at home. Please contact Nurse Jasmin Whitfield if you would like more specific information. Our two Middle School robotics teams competed in a qualifying competition on Saturday at The Woods Academy. Although neither team amassed enough points to move ahead in the competition, all worked hard and learned a lot! The “Quaker Oats” (7/8) team included Jordan Bessalel, Sam Blazes, Harry Finn, Andy Harris, Imran Hossain, Spencer Kee, Garrett Nixon, and Jason Souvaliotis. The “Sidwell Friendzy” (5/6) team consisted of Eric Doddy, Stephen Forrester, David Hacker, Olivia Heard, Max Inman , Mitchell Jubeir, Harry Kay, Sterling Kee, Nyusha Lin, and Alex Wang. The team was coached by Upper School Computer Science teacher Darby Thompson with assistance from parents Sara Jane Harris and Gus Bessalel. We have completed our final count of our UNICEF collection – thanks to all of the Middle Schoolers who helped collect over $900 during their trick-or-treating! Last week sixteen faculty and administrators from Sidwell Friends, including Kimberly Clarkson and Christine Stokes-Beverley from the Middle School, continued the valued tradition of attending and participating in the NAIS annual People of Color Conference. Eight Upper School students attended the concurrent Student Diversity Leadership Conference. The conference was held in Philadelphia this year and ran Thursday through Saturday. It included addresses from Wes Moore, Patti Solis Doyle, Lorene Carey, and Martin Nesbitt, a viewing of ‘Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin,” as well as numerous workshops on the topic of supporting all of the cultural diversity in our independent school community. Read MoreQuaker Quotes On Meeting for Worship Breathe in the quiet purpose of this place; Through outward stillness, seek a calm within. Here we can find forgiveness and forgive; Here feel the healing miracle begin. Breathe out the busy world, the teeming mind, The follies, fears and failures of the week; Breathe out contention, pettiness and pride, And wait in trust for that of God to speak. Breathe in communion, friend with quiet friend, Each drawing closer in this timeless hour; As all our different needs and gifts are drawn To the one source of comfort, love and power. Breathe out at last, to God, the heart's full thanks That we have seen this vision, known this grace; Renewed through love, let us that love extend Through all our daily life beyond this place.
