When we return to school, students will have three weeks of classes before the two-week winter holiday. Students should reach out to teachers during this time to clear up lingering questions or gain greater clarity on a topic. Parents should also feel free to reach out to advisors with any questions before the winter break and semester exams. The debate club has had a great fall season so far! They had their first tournament at Yorktown High School in mid-October and their second tournament earlier this month at South Lakes High School. A number of our students have qualified to compete in March at Metros, the regional debate competition. This includes five public forum teams and four students in Congress. The club also entered their first-ever team in Policy at the South Lakes tournament and came away with first place in the novice division. The Policy team will move up to the JV division and will also compete at Metros in March. Congratulations to the entire group! Model UN has also had a successful fall! After a preliminary in-house conference to train new participants, 27 Sidwell Friends students participated in the McLean High School conference. Students participated in Model UN committees on Disarmament and International Security, World Trade, and Human Rights. Students in the specialized committees negotiated Brexit as members of the British House of Commons and served as strategists for the White Army during the Russian Civil War. Six students received verbal commendations and two received awards for Outstanding Delegate. In January, Model UN students will attend the Ivy League Model UN Conference at the University of Pennsylvania. If your child is interested in getting involved with Model UN or debate, it’s never too late. Students may join now and gain exposure and prepare for next year’s competitions. Interested students should contact Robbie Gross for Model UN and Diane Scattergood for debate. Last weekend, Upper School psychologist Kasaan Holmes and faculty member Josh Markey, along with six Upper School students, attended the Washington Area Independent School Summit on Sexual Assault and Consent, hosted by Georgetown Day School. Experts in the field presented on various topics ranging from the effect of alcohol on consent to developing prevention programs. The Sidwell Friends students will collaborate with Dr. Holmes, Mr. Markey, and other faculty and staff to develop a consent education program for Upper School students. We invite Upper School parents to join students, faculty, and staff at our December 1 Meeting for Worship. We will gather for meeting at 9:35 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. We hope you’ll join us! Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements GLOBAL PROGRAMS APPLICATION DEADLINE IS DEC. 1 The deadline to apply for the Upper School Global Programs is Thursday, December 1. Students interested in traveling for the community engagement, enrichment, and academic programs should submit the common application to room 222 by the end of the day on the 1st. The application is available at www.sidwell.edu/trips. Read the trip brochure here. SHORT-TERM HOST FAMILIES NEEDED We need short-term host families from January 22 to 28, 2017, for a group of visiting students from our sister school in Shanghai, the high school attached to Fudan University. There will be a total of 14 students and one teacher—eight girls and six boys. The Fudan group will spend Chinese New Year with us, so the host siblings are invited join the Fudan students for a special Spring Festival eve dinner on Friday, January 27. The students will all speak English and are led by their English teacher, Sun Ting, who is also the mother of Hengchu Zhang '10, SFS Chinese exchange student. This is the 25th year of our exchange with Fudan High School, and, with the help of your hospitality, we are looking forward to celebrating that long-standing relationship. Host families would provide transportation to and from school (on the host family schedule—the students will adapt) and a room for the visiting students. The Fudan students will spend two days shadowing SFS host students, and then will visit sites in DC on their own; host families do not need to serve as tour guides. This is a great chance for our Sidwell Friends community to reciprocate for the hospitality shown to our students over the years in Shanghai. Many thanks for your help in hosting this group! Please contact Qihui Tang at tangq@sidwell.edu for more information if your family is interested in hosting one or more of the Shanghai students. HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE FOR FAPAC: THROUGH DEC. 2 Please help us provide toys for the Foster and Adoptive Parent Advocacy Center (FAPAC) holiday gift drive. FAPAC, which trains and supports foster, kinship, and adoptive families, hosts a holiday party for children in the DC foster care system and their foster, adoptive, and birth families; presents will be given to all of the children at this event on December 17. Sign up here to drop off new, unwrapped gifts in their original packaging, or give gift cards, today through December 2. Gifts should be left in boxes by Dean Woods's office. Gift cards should be left with Shoshanna Sumka, room 222. The value of each gift should be less than $50. Volunteers are welcome to help wrap gifts. Thank you for helping with this Sidwell Friends tradition. Questions? E-mail them to marlin.dohlman@gmail.com or sumkas@sidwell.edu. For more about FAPAC, visit dcfapac.org. ACTION NEEDED BY JAN. 6: SFS FINANCIAL AID Welcome to the official start of the financial aid season! The Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) is now available for families looking to apply for financial aid for the 2017/18 academic year. Families can log in by visiting the SSS for Families website and clicking "Log in to Complete or Update Your PFS" or by accessing the SSS Family Portal directly. You may find this information helpful: SSS Family Guide to Financial Aid. Applications from current families are due no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, January 6. Submitting an application after the due date may prevent your family from receiving the full award for which you qualify. And please remember, information from both parents must be submitted regardless of marital status. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Frankie Brown, director of admissions and financial aid, at brownf@sidwell.edu. Events DATE CHANGE! PARENT COFFEE BEFORE MFW: NOW DEC. 1 The Upper School Quaker Life Committee's Parent Coffee has been changed from Monday, November 28, to Thursday, December 1. Parents will gather from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. in the Choral Room of the Kogod Arts Center. All parents are invited to attend Meeting for Worship with Upper School students after the coffee in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room from 9:35 to 10:20 a.m. New parents are encouraged to attend to learn more about this key component of Quakerism and their children's Quaker education. UPPER SCHOOL ARTS WEEKEND: DEC. 9 & 11 The SFS Grandparents and Friends Steering Committee is encouraging constituents to come to the Upper School Arts Show and Concerts on December 9 and 11. Members of the Steering Committee will be present to offer a special welcome to grandparents and friends. Please feel free to extend an invitation directly to your student’s grandparents and other special friends. If any visitors need special help or parking, please contact Kathi Webb at webbk@sidwell.edu. PARENTS OF BLACK STUDENTS ANNUAL HOLIDAY POTLUCK: DEC. 3 Please join the Parents of Black Students for our annual holiday gathering on Saturday, December 3, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. SFS parents DeDe and Dallas Lea have graciously volunteered to host this potluck get-together. Please RSVP here. CASTING CALL FOR PARENTS OF SENIORS: DEC. 6 It’s time to start planning our Senior Celebration! This is a Parents Association-sponsored evening with food, fun, and a little foolishness! It is the big event before the main event (graduation!) and a time to celebrate our seniors and the memories we've shared as a community over the years. The Class of 2017 Senior Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 3, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Kogod Arts Center. A light supper and parent-supplied entertainment will be provided. In the past, the parent entertainment has included silly skits, songs, and slide shows. Traditionally, at some point all the parents take the stage! Many volunteers are needed to make this event a success. With that in mind, all senior parents are invited (and urged) to join us for our first meeting on Tuesday, December 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the US Choral Room. We need help planning the event, composing funny lyrics, writing skits, producing videos, organizing a slide show, and adding a few new ideas to the mix! If you haven't volunteered yet at Sidwell Friends, now is your chance ... in fact, it is literally your last chance as a Class of 2017 parent. Don't miss the opportunity to help make this an awesome, fun, and memorable celebration for all of our graduates. —Peggy Dotzel and Jackie Roberts, Senior Celebration Chairs (Margaret.dotzel@verizon.net; jroberts3413@gmail.com) SFS AT THE WIZARDS: JAN. 6 SFS Community Night at the Washington Wizards is Friday, January 6. The 7:00 p.m. game is against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Tickets are $25. Our SFS chamber chorus will sing the national anthem. Early access for our group begins at 5:00 p.m. and includes a variety of pregame opportunities for children and adults to get close to the players. Tickets and information about sign-ups for special access opportunities (Fan Tunnel, Bench Warmer, Anthem Kids) will be available via the Sunday newsletter on December 3. Other COMMUNITY COMMUNICATIONS AND PHOTOS If you are looking for photos or stories about events on campus, don’t forget to check the links at the bottom of our website home page. Click on the SmugMug icon (green happy face) for team and event photos that you can view and download for free, and click on the Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram icons for news and reminders via social media. There’s a lot of great material on these sites! Finally, please send any photos or stories you’d like to share to communications@sidwell.edu. ONGOING TOILETRIES COLLECTIONS If you are traveling and staying at an establishment that provides toiletries such as soap and lotion and you do not use them, please bring them to school. We share them with many local nonprofit organizations such as Bethesda Cares that help underserved populations. Collections are ongoing; items may be dropped off at Lower School, Middle School, or Zartman House. Upper School Weekly E-Newsletter Submissions How to Submit an Article to the E-Newsletter.
