Dear R.,

I was chatting on the phone with Chas last week. I could hear his
young children playing in the background. Caden, Ava, and Payton were
on Thanksgiving break and there was a wonderful flutter of family
activity. I heard giggles and shrieks of delight, then some
roughhousing and a crash. Chas paused to yell "clean up that
mess!" and the children scattered. A father's job is truly
nonstop.

Three years ago on his 45th birthday, Chas was diagnosed with stage IV
prostate cancer. I couldn't help but think about his children
and how every holiday now must have a new meaning for them. This
precious family with three young children is facing the fight of their
life.
