As 2016 comes to a close, we reflect on a busy year and an unprecedented election. And whether you are enthusiastic or discomforted by this year’s events, or still processing them like I am, I believe that it has created an opportunity for us to renew our commitment to democracy. I can’t think of a better place to be working to do just that than the Edward M. Kennedy Institute. With the thousands of students, dozens of events, and daily programs we had at the Institute this year, I have been inspired by the conversations taking place. What we saw throughout this fall was not an unengaged, cynical electorate, but an inquisitive, persistent, and optimistic public that wants to know how to make a difference in their communities. Senator Kennedy once said “America is a nation founded on hope and the constant quest for a better tomorrow. We know the future will outlast all of us,” he continued, “but I believe we all live on in the future that we make.” In the coming year, we intend to continue to break new ground in civic engagement, using our exhibits and programs to encourage the educators, visitors, and students who come through our doors to participate in and experience democracy. I look forward to engaging all of you in the coming months in these exciting discussions, and wish you and your families a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Best, Dr. Jean F.
