Dear Kathleen and Hunter,

I hope your summer has been a positive and productive one.

That has been the case here at the AG's office, and I wanted to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on a couple of important issues.

When you elected me as Attorney General, I said that first and foremost among my goals was to help protect the most vulnerable among us -- children, seniors, and domestic violence victims -- and last week we made two great strides towards rooting out abuse of power in Delaware.

First, thanks to a law my office helped write and Gov. Jack Markell signed, we can now do even more to protect battered women and their children. The new law, which advocates worked tirelessly to make a reality, strengthens protections for survivors of domestic violence and builds on a law we passed several years ago that made it easier for victims to receive protection from their abuser.

Protection from Abuse Orders will now be stronger, giving victims more peace of mind and helping them to move on with their lives. The orders' no-contact provisions could even remain effective for life in cases where a deadly weapon was used, previous orders have been violated, or the perpetrator still poses an immediate danger.

Just as importantly, the new law places the burden for lifting the order exactly where it should be: on the shoulders of the criminal who abused the victim. No longer will a victim have to continually go back to court to seek continued protection.

In addition to these new protections for domestic violence victims, our work to stand up for society's most vulnerable received another boost last week when the Governor signed a law that protects at-risk seniors: http://www.beaubiden.com/news/2010/92-7-wgmd-new-law-creates-stiffer-penalties-for-criminals-who-target-the-elderly-handicapped/ Criminals who prey on them will now face tough new penalties. The sentences these criminals will face reflect the deplorable nature of the crimes they commit.

These changes will make a big difference in the lives of the victims my office helps every day.
