Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty's political comeback stalled Tuesday, as he lost the Republican primary for his old post to 2014 nominee Jeff Johnson.

Johnson, a Hennepin County commissioner, had 53 percent of the vote to Pawlenty's 44 percent when the Associated Press called the primary with 68 percent of precincts reporting.

Pawlenty served two terms as governor from 2003 to 2011 before making a failed bid for president. He then served as the head of the Financial Services Roundtable, a trade group that advocates for the nation's biggest banks in Washington.

Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton is retiring. Rep. Tim Walz won the Democratic nomination.
