Anita Allen of the Law School and the School of Arts and Sciences, and the vice provost for faculty, is the first female African-American president of the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association. Throughout her four-decade career, she has pushed boundaries, establishing herself in what was once a white male-dominated field. Today she’s a leader and mentor, particularly to young women of color.

Saif Khawaja of Dubai has always thought outside of the box. As a Sachs Program for Arts Innovation grant winner, he will be designing a piece of art that will emit light in response to sound. “I want to push people to understand that tech can be a part of art, too,” he says.

The School of Engineering and Applied Science is launching a new online master’s degree in computer and information technology aimed at nontraditional students who want to break into tech. “Our vision,” says Penn Engineering Dean Vijay Kumar, “is for a high-impact program that is more accessible and more affordable for more students.”

Regina Salmons (center), a May graduate, has been named a Division I Second-Team All-American by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Salmons, from Methuen, Mass., is the fourth rower in program history to earn All-American status. Thirty-five local high schoolers are participating in the SMASH Wharton program, which invites students to experience college life at Penn for three summers. Participants, supported by RAs like engineering student Christopher Valencia (right) of Clifton, N.J., will enjoy a STEM-intensive curriculum that features business electives like marketing and economics. This is the first year the West Coast-born program has teamed with an Ivy League institution and with a business school.
