That said, please check the town hall - and if not there, the gymnasium at the LB community center*** The Long Beach Town Council will consider the Proposed Shoreline Preservation Ordinance tomorrow, Monday, August 13 at 7pm at the LB Community Center gymnasium. PLEASE ATTEND AND SHOW SUPPORT. While we are disappointed that the proposed ordinance does not contain any setback requirements from the Natural Ordinary High Watermark (the same setback requirement to which all owners of non-lakefront properties are subject) or an even more protective setback as recommended in the IDNR Model Ordinance, we are encouraged that this ordinance establishes standards for construction of structures on beach-fronting dune property which are a big step in the right direction for good governance. These are rational safeguards against reckless and destructive development practices on our lakefront. We applaud the Long Beach Advisory Planning Commission members for their hard work and determination to balance the interests of those who wish to develop and protect their private property with those of us who want to protect the public beach, the dunes, and Town-owned Stop properties. STEP #1: We highly encourage attendance at the town council meeting to support passage of this ordinance. Those opposing the ordinance are well organized and very vocal in their opposition. While we are confident that far more people support the ordinance than oppose it, this is not always evidenced in these meetings – PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND STEP #2: The most recent example of reckless and destructive activity on our lakefront includes the stripping of dune grass and plowing of dunes into Lake Michigan that occurred this past week in front of several homes in the 1800 block of Lake Shore Drive, as evidenced in the attached photos. This sickening action both exceeded the DNR permit to remove wind-blown sand and violated the Town of Long Beach building code which requires that dune elevations and vegetation be maintained. Please take a moment to lodge a complaint with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources at (219) 874-8316. Also, please email Town Council President Bob Lemay at lbplemay@gmail.com and demand that the Town issue STOP WORK ORDERS and FINE the owners of the plowed properties for violation of the Town’s topography ordinance. All the good laws in the world mean nothing if the State and Town don’t enforce them! THANK YOU!! Many thanks for your support – specifically those who have attended and participated in the APC’s Beach Ordinance meetings, including the many people who sent letters supporting the ordinance to our town officials. These broad based efforts are an integral part of ensuring the voices of the community are heard. Please Continue Your Support We appreciate your continued support. Please make checks payable to the Long Beach Community Alliance which can be sent to: LBCA P.O. Box 167 Michigan City, IN 46361 or donations can be processed online via our website at [http://www.lbcall.org] Again, thank you for your continued support.
