The Institute’s third national survey found a disconnect between voters and their United States Senators. Voters express dissatisfaction with the performance of Congress and a desire for senators who are responsive to the people they represent. At the same time, the data points to an American electorate that lacks basic knowledge about the U.S. political system.

But there are encouraging notes, too: Americans across different political parties are aligned on the top issues facing the United States and believe that senators working together to find common ground is key to progress. Further, Americans express keen motivation to vote in the upcoming elections, value increased diversity in senatorial ranks, and demonstrate high levels of civic engagement. Mid-term elections are just around the corner. At the Institute, kids can vote, too! Kid Convention 2018 is a free, family-friendly day of programs for kids ages 5 and up. Young visitors learn about issues, vote on candidates, and participate in election-related art projects.

Thanks to the generosity of the Highland Street Foundation (http://www.highlandstreet.org/programs/free-fun-fridays) , the Institute was able to welcome hundreds of visitors for a free day of programs designed to empower people of all ages to take an active role in our democracy.

MASSACHUSETTS LEGISLATIVE INTERNS BECOME SENATORS FOR A DAY AT THE INSTITUTE
Nearly 100 students participating in the Massachusetts State House legislative intern program recently visited the Institute for a day of interactive educational programs. The interns had the opportunity to hear from State Senator Patrick O'Connor and state house reporters Steve Brown and Matt Murphy, and participate in a mock legislative session on Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

BETSY RIGBY JOINS INSTITUTE AS NEW CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
The Institute is thrilled to announce that Betsy Rigby joined the Institute's leadership team as Chief Development Officer. Betsy has nearly thirty years of experience in leading successful fundraising strategies for nonprofits in the Greater Boston area. In her new role, she will lead the Institute's development operations.

BOSTON DEBATE LEAGUE CONVENES AT THE INSTITUTE
This week, students from the Boston Debate League, a nonprofit that teaches competitive debate in Boston Public Schools, are convening at the Institute for their summer debate camp. The students are learning and practicing debate framework and tackling topical issues including immigration reform and the DREAM Act through the Institute's educational programs.
