August is winding down, which makes right now a great time to get your board’s priorities in order and set yourself up for a successful school year.

To do so, we recommend a 3-step process to prioritize your board’s work:

A): Decide on your board’s top 3 priorities:

For example:

- Improve governing board effectiveness
- Develop active, engaged committees
- Find and recruit exceptional new trustees

B): Develop a set of measurable board goals:

For example:

- Complete a board assessment by October 2018, and create an actionable board improvement plan by December 2018
- Expand the board by 3 trustees, with the prioritized skills of fundraising, finances and public relations by January 2019
- Identify a best-in-class tool and process to complete an end-of-year CEO Evaluation that will strengthen our board-CEO partnership
