http://madmuseum.org/ https://madmuseum.org/exhibition/derrick-adams-sanctuary "Sanctuary recalls a history that cannot be omitted, but it also one with which many cannot—and should not—hastily commiserate. Victor Hugo Green, the eponymous creator of the book, had hoped that one day his publication would be obsolete; Adams ensures that it will not be overlooked. Perhaps remembering and recreating sanctuaries is an act of resistance too." — Artist Derrick Adams reinterprets Jim Crow era travel guidebooks by Interview Magazine (https://www.interviewmagazine.com/art/artist-derrick-adams-sanctuary-interview) https://madmuseum.org/events/techno-love-series https://madmuseum.org/events/techno-love-series Experience Techno-Love Series (https://madmuseum.org/events/techno-love-series) tonight from 6–8:30 pm with summer artist-in-residence Cynthia Alberto (https://madmuseum.org/learn/summer-studio-residency-cynthia-alberto-and-weaving-hand) and members of her healing arts studio, Weaving Hand. In this audiovisual performance, thirty dancers wear woven, wearable "cocoons" that emphasize the inclusive, communal nature of Alberto's work. Inspired by the euphoria induced by connecting through music, the shamanic, techno-fueled dance routine is a ritual of healing and emotional release. After the performance, visitors are invited to interact with the cocoons and engage in their own healing and release. Free to attend with Pay-What-You-Wish Admission. The body of work was inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book, an annual guidebook for black American road-trippers published by New York postal worker Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1967, during the Jim Crow era in America. Sanctuary reflects on the plight of working-class black people before and during the Civil Rights Movement, and their determination to pursue the same American Dream afforded to others. This particular weaving draft represents a “sample blanket,” a textile that uses different warp and weft combinations in small sections in order to experiment with weave structures, yarn and color. Printed at this scale, the pattern is recognizable as a tool specific to textile work, while resembling the pixels associated with the digital.
