Instead of tossing that malfunctioning putter into the garage or a closet, try a new performance-enhancing grip (https://golfweek.com/2018/08/07/performance-enhancing-grips-can-relieve-putting-problems/) . Several major manufacturers have offerings that promise to prevent a too-handsy stroke and get the ball rolling quicker on a better line. Five of the top 10 players in the world will use such grips this week at the PGA Championship. New pellets. Srixon’s new, two-piece Soft Feel golf ball has a core (https://golfweek.com/2018/08/01/srixon-soft-feel-golf-balls/) that is softer toward the center and firmer toward the outside. The company said the softer inner section helps boost speed on tee shots, while the firmer outer section of the core promotes spin on chips and pitches. Higher, faster. Ping’s new i500 irons combine a hollow body with a thin, forged face (https://golfweek.com/2018/07/16/ping-i500-irons/) to boost ball speed and increase distance with a clean design intended to appeal to low- and mid-handicappers. The clubs also produce less spin to gain distance, but because of a higher flight, they still are capable of holding a green because the ball drops from a greater height. Extremely precise. The faces of Cobra’s new King F8 drivers are CNC-milled to more-exacting tolerances, allowing designers to push the limits of USGA regulations without running afoul of the rules because of manufacturing variances. And Cobra’s Tom Olsavsky said the milling process allows for consistently better face geometry. Check out the back story here. Check out what will be worn (https://golfweek.com/2018/08/07/2018-pga-championship-scripting-what-top-players-will-wear-at-bellerive/) by Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and other favorites this week at Bellerive. ** SEEN & HEARD ------------------------------------------------------------ DJ makes putter swap. After shooting 64 on Sunday at the WGC-Bridgestone, Dustin Johnson said that even though he won the Canadian Open the week before, he had not been happy with this putting. The world's No. 1 player said that, after hitting the ball well but not holing a lot of putts through the first three rounds at Firestone, he decided the time was right to break out a new putter and played Sunday using a silver-toned, 35.25-inch TaylorMade Spider Mini. TaylorMade said Johnson asked for the putter to be made while he was at Carnoustie, and it has a Surlyn insert that is softer than the standard aluminum insert. Company reps said Johnson likes the softer insert because he believes he can make a more aggressive stroke with it. Johnson's strokes gained putting on Sunday was 2.443, fifth-best in the final round. Bill Haas searches for a putter. Bill Haas has spent much of the past few months trying to find a new putter. For years he used various heel-toe-weighted blades, and at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February he had a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 prototype in the bag. At the Wells Fargo Championship, he used an Odyssey O-Works Red #7, and that putter was in the bag again at the U.S. Open. At the John Deere Classic he went with a Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2. At the British Open the Odyssey went back into play, and last week at the Barracuda Championship, Haas went with a Directed Force Reno putter, a massive mallet designed to be lie-angle balanced and stay square to the stroke path. ** THE BRAIN GAME ------------------------------------------------------------ Meltdown survival tips.
