The Trump administration announced it would freeze fuel-efficiency improvements for cars and trucks, in yet another attack on the Obama administration's environmental rules.

The administration also announced it would seek to stop states like California from adopting their own stricter vehicle rules addressing problems like smog and climate change.

The proposal is sure to set off a legal fight with California, which has vowed to protect its unique authority to set tougher requirements. Twelve other states follow California's rules, and altogether make up 40 percent of the U.S. market for cars and light-duty trucks.
