Truman National Security Project ! This month, Truman launched a website that covers basic facts regarding Russian election interference, presented at Women Action for a New Direction's communications training in Seattle, and argued against the Trump Administratin's draconian immigration policies.


Moh Kilani
Moh Kilani is an analyst for Galvanize Partners where he develops strategy and provides research for clients. He has a decade of experience in international business and foreign affairs, focused on the Middle East and North Africa. Most recently, Kilani published research through the ODNI Analytic Exchange Program on blockchain technology and critical sector cyber-resilience. His proposed topic on the usage of blockchain vis-a-vis document security was accepted and included for the 2018 cycle. Previously, Kilani ran an export venture to North Africa and served as a liaison between the Department of Defense and an American-Libyan interest. Kilani holds a BS in biology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MA in Applied International Studies from the University of
Washington. He is a native speaker of Arabic, with a smattering of knowledge of Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese.


Kilani has been a leading figure in Seattle in the protests against the Muslim ban and the separation of undocumented families. He organized the 10,000-strong protest at the Seatac Federal Detention Facility and was sent a bill for $37,000 for crowd control. He has built bridges for Truman’s Seattle Chapter with major organizations including the ACLU, CAIR, and the Women’s March in order to reach across issues and demographics. Kilani has also built relationships with a variety of stakeholders like state government, utilities, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the Port and City of Seattle, Crowdstrike, Dragos, and Seattle Police Department. He hopes to guide the Seattle Chapter towards strategic initiatives including critical sector cyber-resilience, immigration,
veterans’ affairs, and bridging the rural-urban divide in Washington state.
Stop the Slide is the first practitioner-driven indications and warning system for American democracy. This month, new indicators in the categories of Freedom of Speech/Assembly and Security Services were triggered, while an authoritarian threat to the Freedom of the Press subsided, leading to respective changes in Weighted Authoritarian Value (above). Putin's Puppet
This month, Truman launched

PutinsPuppet.net, a project designed to find the signal among the noise and distill some basic facts about Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

The site will be updated continuously as the ongoing investigation develops. For now, it includes a tool for examining connections between people in the Trump orbit and Russia, the key points regarding Special Counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s investigation, information on how foreign intelligence service officers cultivate assets, a video of President Trump\u2019s past comments on Russia and Putin, and an educational quiz on how readers can avoid foreign entanglements.

WAND Seattle Training
From 10-12 June, certified Truman trainers partnered with Women Action for a New Direction (WAND) for their second communications training of the year in Seattle, Washington.

Over the course of three days, the nearly 30 participants focused on better understanding defense budgeting and more effectively communicating to their respective constituents. Truman presented four trainings. Truman Director of Training and Public Engagement Anthony Robinson and Political Partner Ross Cohen conducted Military 101, in which they discussed how to best engage with veterans and military families. Truman Communications Director Graham West and Press Secretary Jalina Porter presented our flagship training Strategic Communications. In addition, Robinson and Porter trained participants on how to enhance their on-air presence in the training, On-Camera, and West discussed how to write, pitch, and amplify op-eds in Op-Ed 101.

Immigration
At the end of June, President Trump signed an executive order in response to the uproar against his administration’s policy of separating children from their parents at the southern U.S. border.

These separations began as a direct result of the administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which focused on charging more people with illegal entry. The Truman community responded immediately, arguing against this policy in more than a dozen earned and placed media hits in states such as Arkansas, Texas, Colorado, and Illinois. Truman Chapters also banded together to urge the governors of their states to—depending on each state’s respective situation—urge them to pull the state’s National Guards from the southern border, prohibit their deployment, or thank them for already doing either of those actions. Our Chapters in Atlanta, Chicago, North Carolina, Philadelphia, Texas, Seattle, and New York all sent letters to their respective

Unneeded task force puts naturalized citizens at risk, by David DeCarlo, Truman Security Fellow


Not all of the 20 million naturalized citizens in the United States will be targeted directly by the task force, but many could be robbed of their sense of having a permanent home in this country, their right to speak and assemble freely without fear of government reprisal, and their participation in the same civic inheritance as native-born citizens.
