International Herald Tribune May 21, 2010 Deeds Not Words Regarding your editorial “Iran’s failed gambit” (May 19): Why is the ghost of the Bush administration policy toward Iran still around? The antagonism that has been the hallmark of U.S. policy toward Iran for the last 30 years continues unabated. Where is the “smart diplomacy” promised by the secretary of state, Hillary Clinton? Why is Mrs. Clinton so determined to continue actions that perpetuate mistrust and hatred? Whose interest does it serve? Certainly not America’s. Imagine the results if all of Mrs. Clinton’s efforts had been to engage rather than to punish. Now that Turkey and Brazil have given the U.S. an opening, it is in America’s national security and economic interests to take advantage of that work. Common sense and the urgency of now demand deeds and not just words from the Obama administration. Fariborz S. Fatemi, McLean, Virgini
