Electoral violence subverts basic standards for democratic elections -- a cornerstone of democratic governance. Votes Without Violence: Addressing Violence Against Women in Elections Through Citizen Observation [1] [2] [1] Dear Friends, Electoral violence subverts basic standards for democratic elections -- a cornerstone of democratic governance. Violence against women in elections is a form of this violence, one that happens around the world. Women, whether they are candidates, officials or simply citizens exercising their right to vote, are attacked for daring to enter or participate in elections, and too often are prevented from participating in the electoral process entirely. Women voters face violence at four times the rate of male voters during elections -- but we need more data to shed light on the full scope of this serious issue. Through its Votes Without Violence initiative, NDI is developing and testing new strategies to address violence against women in elections. Collecting needed data on this under-reported issue provides institutions, organizations and individuals the information they need to take informed action to support women's right to freely participate in elections. To that end, NDI is proud to announce its new Votes Without Violence website, launched today by NDI's Senior Advisor for Gender, Women and Democracy, Caroline Hubbard, at the 11th Implementation Meeting of the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation. The website presents a wealth of data from NDI's work with its partner election observation organizations on the issue of violence against women in elections, and serves as a companion for NDI's Votes Without Violence toolkit, which provides detailed guidance and a set of practical tools and resources for election observers. Please follow the link below to explore the website; and share and join the conversation using the hashtag #VotesWithoutViolence.
