I hear your heading for the train and I am assuming that means you are
headed to Delaware to see your brother. Sorry to hear about his medical
emergency and I hope he is doing better and getting healthy. Family
emergencies are so very taxing. My dad and his brother and his sister had
to move my grandmother to the memory unit of her retirement community this
week due the the rapid progression of her Alzheimer¹s and it has been a
gut-wrenching activity. One aspect that has been slightly amusing in a
gallows sort of way is that she believes she is being moved to that ward
because she has too many parking tickets. (She has not driven a car in 5
years). Needless to say, her belief helps calm some of the guilt her kids
feel for having to move her.

Just so you know, I have gotten Jonathan Schwartz, one of your fellow board
members, to agree to take-on the role of Chairman for 90 days or so while we
continue our search for a new Chair. My plan, assuming that we are
unsuccessful at finding an appropriate person by June 18 is to install
Jonathan as the temporary chair, reconstitute the nominating committee as a
special search committee and then announce our nationwide search through the
usual media channels. Jonathan will serve as the chair of the special
search committee and hopefully we will have a strong candidate for the
position before the year is out. In the event that 90 days pass and no one
shows-up on radar or Jonathan can¹t take it anymore we will engage in a
series of 90-day interim chairmanships with each of the board members. I am
hopeful that the threat of having to hold the Chair will be suitable
motivation for people to assist J. and the special search committee in their
duties.

All that being said, I completely understand the fact that your time is even
further stretched by family obligations. If there is anything we can do to
be of assistance, please let us know. Give me a call or drop me an email if
you get some time and we can discuss some of your thinking about potential
board candidates. On a side note, we had a wonderful and powerful hearing
today on the DOD prostate cancer program with the House Defense
Subcommittee. Sherry Galloway and Jonathan Simons of PCF really hit home
with their very different but very relevant testimonies. Of eight Members
attending the hearing Sherry managed to make 4 or them, including two men
cry. I know that is a shallow measure but I can¹t remember a time when our
message has had enough impact to bring-out emotion. Marcy Kaptur and Rep.
Ryan came-up to Sherry immediately after the hearing, hugged-her and pledged
their support. Chairman Dicks spent considerable time with Dr Simons and
overall I feel that we finally held our own alongside Fran Viscoe and breast
cancer. If only we could have had this kind of impact three to five years
ago. I am skeptical that this will result in an increase in funding for us
this year but I am confident it effectively prevented a cut. I am also
optimistic that we have some budding new champions in the House.
