If you attended one of the four presidential and vice presidential debates this year, you would have received a glossy program which was produced by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). The 13-page program outlines the work of the Commission, including two pages, which are attached, dedicated to its cooperation with NDI in helping to organize candidate and party debates worldwide. In collaboration with the CPD and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the site of the final debate, NDI hosted 45 representatives from a coalition of debate organizers from 24 countries. These members of the Debates International network shared experience among themselves, as well as with students, faculty and the media. Their presence at the debate itself was recognized on national television. We have found, particularly in post-conflict countries, that debates help temper harsh campaign rhetoric, level the electoral playing field, and force candidates to focus on public policy issues. Matt Dippell, NDI's deputy director for Latin America, manages NDI's Debates International program and, every four years, serves as a key staff member of the CPD during the lead up to the presidential and vice presidential debates.
