Dear Robert,

Today would have been the 80th birthday of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California and a true hero of our state.

That's why today we pause to remember Harvey Milk and what he did for all of us by celebrating the first annual Harvey Milk Day all across California.

In many respects, Harvey Milk got the fight started to provide equal rights under the law for gay and lesbian Californians -- paving the way for what has become perhaps the leading civil rights issue of our age.

As your Attorney General, I will continue what I can of that fight in the struggle for marriage equality, because I believe discrimination, in any form, at any time, is just plain wrong.
