Folks, over the last year, we’ve all had conversations about creating original programming. As we grow, I think it’s especially important for us to have original content as we look to expand our fundraising opportunities. After 6 months of running other people’s programming, we think one area we could expand is in to the child focused (ages 4-9-ish) sexual abuse prevention programming. There are a number of really great programs that exist already (scroll to the bottom of this report to read about a handful: http://www.nsvrc.org/sites/default/files/Publications_NSVRC_Guide_Child-Sexual-Abuse-Prevention-programs-for-children.pdf) <http://www.nsvrc.org/sites/default/files/Publications_NSVRC_Guide_Child-Sexual-Abuse-Prevention-programs-for-children.pdf)>. They vary in length, but all are classroom based, and mostly facilitator led. We could definitely pay some experts to come up with a really awesome program that would be similar in structure and content to one of these. Or, we could totally rethink how these messages are delivered to kids. And to their parents. Last week, Patty and I chatted with a friend of mine, Scott Greenberg. Scott runs Bento Box <http://www.bentoboxent.com/>, a very successful animation studio (Bob’s Burgers and some other 18-34 demo animated shows). They just launched a kids division and are working on some ideas with Nick and Disney. We had a great brainstorming session, and what follows is a summary of our talk. Idea: Short form content series that can be widely distributed and shared across multiple platforms and drives to BBF website and ultimately some type of app. Let’s go where the kids are most likely to pay attention to important messages. • 15/30 seconds for TV (fit inside commercial or promo programming slots) • 30 seconds to 3 minutes for mobile and digital • Can be bundled together as a longer form media to be downloaded or programmed • All drive to digital home on website or app that has more educational information and possible interactive games, lesson plans, fact/tip sheets, etc. • Animation and live action hybrids. Funding: As much of this should be in-kinded or paid for with direct underwriting and sponsorship. Initial cost would be to develop a 30-60 second video lesson to show the scope and vision of the project – a trailer of sorts. Additional upfront expense would be experts to help create and vet the content. Again, focus would be in in-kinding of this knowledge. Get a brand sponsor: • a company that buys a lot of media and can barter with media company • Examples: P&G, Hasbro, Mattel, Walmart, Target, big banks • Sponsor may also have ability to have in store extensions Get a media partner: • TV, mobile, digital, print to donate airtime or ad inventory • Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon Network, Google/YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, AT&T, Verizon, Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Apple Get a spokesperson(s): • recognizable talent or public figure who audience identifies with • Possible parent and child • Sports, entertainment, music, • Maybe get multiple talent, hosting each segment or topic • Victims of CSA (Demi Lovato, Queen Latifa, Charlize Theron, Teri Hatcher, Oprah) Partnerships that are combo brands, media and talent: • Sports leagues: NBA, NFL, MLB, • WWE or MMA • Music labels: Warner, Sony, Universal, etc. Technology Partnership: • develop app that is both educational and safety tool • Can act like an emergency or help button or reporting tool utilizing GPS, camera, data etc. • Work with device makers or data providers • Apple, Samsung, Google, AT&T, Verizon Obviously this is a huge undertaking and will take us months to develop and vet and get right. And it’s only one idea. But it’s an exciting one, and one I hope we can discuss a lot more in the next week. Can we have a brief executive committee call later this week, perhaps Thursday or Friday, to discuss? Thanks, Josh Joshua Alcorn 302/295.8340 (office) 302/598.1885 (cell) josh@beaubidenfoundation.org
