These musicians always get your toes tapping. Sometimes the meaning of their music evolves as you grow older, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it just sounds right and hits the spot. For me, Bruce Springsteen is at the top of this list of the handful of musicians you can always go back to. With the Boss, almost every one of his records is a singular masterpiece. Can you honestly say that there has ever been a better record recorded than “Born to Run"? I doubt it. But some of Springsteen’s other records come pretty darn close to that level of excellence. “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “The River,” “Born in the USA,” “Nebraska,” and “The Rising,” just to name a few. And then there is Bruce’s 1973 debut record, “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.” I go back to this album all the time. “Asbury Park” has always had mixed reviews, but it absolutely blows me away. The standout track for me, the one I just can’t get over, will never get over, is “It’s Hard to Be A Saint in the City.” The lyrics are so tough: “I had skin like leather and the diamond hard look of a cobra…” The groove is so right—horns, guitars, and percussion all shuffle along to the pace of the mean streets Bruce is singing about. I go back to “Saint” all the time and always will.
