My friend, the esteemed former White House/State Department official Ben Chang, who served both POTUS 43 and 44, asked me a most welcome question the other day. What music produced in 2017 did I enjoy the most?

This proved to be an easy answer for me. And one I realized I hadn’t yet shared in this space.

My favorite record of 2017 is “Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real,” released last August. Nelson is a son of country outlaw legend Willie Nelson. He and his band "Promise of the Real" are the real deal—possibly one of the best live bands performing today.
