of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. Advent is from the Latin word adventus meaning
"coming."

Advent is the season of quiet anticipation and wonder. Use the following questions
to start your reflection:

Former JV reflection

The following is a reflection given by Maureen "Moe" Markey (Juneau, AK '93-94,
Bethel, AK '94-95) at St. Andrew's Catholic parish in Portland, Oregon.

I wonder how Mary reacted when her older cousin told her she was blessed among women.
Blessed for believing what was spoken to her by the Lord would be fulfilled. I wonder
if she had any idea of the impact of what she had committed to. Do any of us have
any idea of the impact, or the power and depth of what will come to fruition, when
we answer the call to bring life to others, to give birth to light, hope, and love

JV and Staff Challenges

Are you up to the challenge?
This week, the Sitka JV community and JVC Northwest staff have taken on a variety
of challenges. The reasons for the challenges are as varied as the challenges themselves,
such as, living in solidarity with those who have less or spending more time in
quiet reflection. Here's some of what we're doing:


* eating only what's in the cupboards
* spending time in daily meditation and creating a community night around "What
Would Jesus Buy"
* creating homemade Christmas gifts
* eating rice and beans for a week
* not watching TV for a week You're invited to set a challenge for yourself and
